Copper thieves arrested

Five men were arrested by the Boksburg North SAPS for theft of copper cables, on January 31, in Main Reef Road.

According to Lieut Juanita Coetzer, communications officer for the Boksburg North SAPS, during a routine visit WO Rudie Bezuidenhout and Sgt Jacques Nienaber arrived at a scrapmetal dealer where they found that the gates were closed.

“WO Bezuidenhout investigated, and saw that the owner was loading clean copper cables into a vehicle.”

She says that the officers arrested five men and confiscated 95m of cable valued at R7 110.

“The cables were identified as power cables, but it is not known to which department they belong.”

* In a separate incident, Bezuidenhout arrested a man after he was found in possession of 15m of stolen copper cables.

Lieut Coetzer says that the man was found in possession of the cables at a secondhand dealer.

“The cables belong to the metro.”
