McBride gets the thumbs up

Despite objections from opposition parties, Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Police endorsed controversial former Ekurhuleni metro police chief Robert McBride's nomination to head up the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).

The committee endorsed McBride’s nomination on Wednesday, January 29.

According to a media report, seven ANC members of Parliament on the Portfolio Committee for Police, voted in favour of McBride, and used their majority to override opposition party objections.

The African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP), the Democratic Alliance (DA), and the Freedom Front Plus voted against the move.

The decision is now awaiting approval by the National Assembly.

The DA warns it will consider legal action if Robert McBride’s appointment as IPID head isn’t reconsidered, arguing that McBride is not a fit candidate for the job.

However, Police minister, Nathi Mthethwa, says he wants McBride to lead the police watchdog body, adding that McBride is the right person for the position, and he wants him to begin as soon as possible.

McBride was convicted of drunk driving in 2006, but the judgment was later overturned.

He was eventually acquitted.
