Illegal dumping continues

A Boksburg resident, Ockert Fourie, contacted the Advertiser, with complaints of illegal dumping on the corner of Ridge and Atlas Road.

According to Fourie, soil and building rubble are the main products being dumped at the said corner.

“Despite the fact that the illegal dumping was reported to the Ekurhuleni municipal council on several occasions, nothing is being done to stop this and clean up the mess,” says Fourie.

He alleges that the culprit of this crime is a company known to the Advertiser, whose construction vehicles were seen on a number of occasions dumping.

He approached the alleged company, who claim that they rented out their trucks to a company whose name is also known to the Advertiser.

The Ekurhuleni metro says there is a process to be followed, which is prescribed by law and cannot be changed.

“Legislation requires that a property owner first be issued with a notice and only once the notice has been expired, can Council take any further legal steps to prevent/clear the illegal dumping,” says metro spokesperson Mandlakazi Mpahlwa-Sigcawu.

Mpahlwa-Sigcawu says a statutory notice was served to the owner of the said property, which expired on November 24.

“As there was no reaction to have the stand cleaned and to cease the illegal dumping, the matter has been handed over to Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality’s Corporate and Legal Department for Legal proceedings (prosecution) regarding the illegal dumping of building rubble and soil,” she says.

She adds that the conducting of business on the said property has been referred to the City Development department, and the construction and renovating of the structure on the property has been referred to the Building Control division for investigation and necessary action.
