Church helps feed the poor

The Seventh Day Adventist Church, in Boksburg North, started their soup kitchen by supplying the poor with curry and rice, on Saturday, January 11.

Jacques Smit says that, every Saturday, residents from an informal settlement walk past the church and drink from their taps.

“This inspired us to start this feeding scheme. We would like to be able to provide these people with a meal every second Saturday,” he says.

According to Smit, there are about 160 people living in the informal settlement.

“During our research we also found that a primary school, close to our church, is in need of our feeding scheme,” he says.

The school is trying to provide 1 100 pupils with meals, but is only able to supply each child with one sandwich per day.

“To most of the children, this is the only meal they get and it is part of our short-term goal to provide the school with sandwiches five times a week, while our long-term goal is to provide them with lunch daily and a food parcel on Fridays,” Smit says, adding that there are many lives on which the church can impact through this soup kitchen outreach.

“We will be able to effectively meet one of the most basic needs of humans: Food,” he adds.

The church is also looking for sponsors to assist them to with continuing this feeding scheme.
