Increase in Gautrain usage

Since the inception of the E-toll system, Dr Barbara Jensen, spokesperson for the Gautrain, says that there has been an increase in Gautrain passengers.

“The first week after E-toll was announced, the number of passenger trips increased from 47 400 per day to 53 000,” she says.

Dr Jensen adds that bus services increased from 18 000 to 22 000.

“This represents an estimated growth of 12.7 per cent on the trains and 22 per cent on the busses.

“This also means that there was an additional 3 000 people on the system.”

She says that the bus number is inflated due to the R1 promotion, which started on December 1, 2013.

The Advertiser previously reported that there are plans in place for Gautrain extensions, with a link from the Gautrain Rhodesfield station to Boksburg being proposed.

“The indicated rail link will be investigated and the necessary studies undertaken in due course before this extension is put in place,” says Dr Jensen.
