Officer killed while breaking up domestic dispute

Dawn Park police Const Harry Ngoepe has been shot and killed after responding to a domestic dispute on the evening of November 18, in Windmill Park.

It is alleged that he and another officer were attending to a domestic violence complaint, involving a man and his mother-in-law, when the suspect fled the scene on foot.

“Constable Harry Ngoepe followed the man to a nearby open veld and the other officer gave chase with the police vehicle,” says Lieut-Col Lungelo Dlamini.

Ngoepe was later found dead with a bullet wound in his head.

“The officer’s service pistol was stolen and it is suspected that he was shot by the man he was chasing,” adds Dlamini.

The suspect was arrested the same night and charged for murder.

The suspect, which is held in custody at Katlehong police station, has denied shooting the constable.

Ngoepe’s gun, the alleged murder weapon, has not yet been recovered.
