Shoppers called to donate food

The Lions Club of Boksburg has recently re-launched its food collection project, the “Food Basket”, and is calling on shoppers to give what they can.

The project was initiated 20 years ago when the club would collect food outside the Pick ‘n Pay Supermarket in Sunward Park.

Lions Club president, Hannelie van der Merwe, says, over the years, the food basket became less popular and not so many people were donating to the project.

The club then made the decision to move to the Checkers on Ridge Road in Buyers Park.

“Once we explained who we were and what we were collecting the food for, Checkers management was only too happy to let us canvas outside the supermarket.

“The food collected is delivered to Child and Family Welfare, which then distributes to organisations it has identified as needy,” says Van der Merwe.

One of the beneficiaries of the project is the Keep Me Safe House – a house open to abused women and children who are in urgent need for protection.

“The women and children stay at the house until more stable arrangements can be made for them,” she says.

The club asks that all shoppers of Checkers to look out for the Lions food collection every first Saturday of each month, and to give a small donation of any non-perishable foods.
