Travel safe these holidays

The September school holidays are upon us and many families will be going away during this break.

Supt Wilfred Kgasago, spokesperson for the EMPD, says that planning and preparing before setting off gives one a better chance of enjoying a safe drive.

“I suggest that drivers pull into rest stops every two hours if they are driving a long distance,” he says.

He adds that motorists should allow extra time for delays and traffic; they should not exceed the speed limit.

“Plan your route, have your map on hand or activate your GPS if you have one.

“It is important that the driver gets enough sleep the night before, does not consume any alcohol and eats properly,” says Kgasago.

He says that one should ensure that their vehicle is packed wisely and safely.

“Do not overload your vehicle.”

According to him motorists should make sure their vehicle undergoes a thorough safety check.

The following should be checked:

* Lights, breaks and indicators.

* Wipers and hooter.

* Check that the clutch and brake fluid levels and battery water levels.

* Fanbelt condition and tension.

* Ensure the spare wheel pressure level is correct and that you have a wheel spanner and jack.

Travel at safe speeds taking into consideration the prevailing conditions such as wet roads and mist.

“Arrange for fun activities for children to make the trip more enjoyable,” he says.
