Share a little happiness and save a life

East Rand residents are called to support the Sunflower Fund National Bandana Day on October 12.

Anyone can share a little happiness by purchasing a bandana from Pick n Pay or the local Round Table for only R25.

According to Tina Botha, founder and director of the fund, all proceeds raised through this campaign will allow the Sunflower Fund to recruit and test many more bone marrow stem cell donors onto the SA Bone Marrow Registry (SABMR).

“This is just another way the public can make a big difference in the lives of patients diagnosed with leukaemia and other life-threatening blood disorders,” she says.

The Sunflower Fund’s work has seen the Registry grow from a mere 800 donors in 2000, to more than 65 500 registered donors today.

“This is an achievement, however, it’s only the tip of the iceberg, as we need to continue our quest and build the SABMR into a database, which has at least 400 000 people registered,” she says.

When purchasing the bandana at Pick n Pay, the Sunflower Fund encourages people to swipe their smart shopper cards to stand a chance of winning one of five R10 000 vouchers or one of five iPads.

“Like a perennial sunflower, these bandanas are back in full force every October, blooming bright to remind us all that there are people less fortunate than ourselves who continuously fight against this disease,” says Botha.
