Police admin staff take grievances to the streets

Thousands of South African Police Service administrative staff employed under the Public Service Act marched to the offices of the National Police Commissioner recently.

This includes people employed as administrative staff at police stations, 10111 call centre operators, and other support services.

Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru) spokeswoman, Theto Mahlakoana, said in a statement, this action follows the employer’s failure to meet the demands of workers during a series of marches in May and June this year.

Mahlakoana says they will be demanding that SAPS implement the agreement that was agreed upon in 2011.

Popcru is demanding on behalf of these workers, that SAPS management should implement a Department for Public Service and Administration (DPSA) directive, which would upgrade the levels of all admin staff in line with other public service departments.

The employer is also bound by law to put into effect an agreement signed in 2011 at the Safety and Security Sectoral Bargaining Council Agreement (SSSBC), which dictates that all employees under the Public Service Act will be translated into the SAPS Act, but has consistently failed to do so.

About 10 000 members were expected to participate.

The march was led by Popcru president, Zizamele Cebekhulu, with other union leaders, Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) and South African Communist Party (SACP) leaders.
