Report tax crime

The South African Revenue Service (Sars) attributes non-compliance to tax laws to a multitude of factors, such as social, psychological, economic and business environments.

Sars vows to change negative attitudes of taxpayers, no matter how long it takes.

The tax collecting authority says there are tax payers who don’t regard the tax system as fair and view non-compliance or tax crime as a way of simply balancing the scales in their favour.

Sars urges the community to help them fight tax crime in South Africa, because the entire country suffers when people don’t pay their tax.

Tax crime is manifested in many forms. Here are some prime examples:

* People don’t declare income in order to not pay the tax on that income.

* People lie about their expenses to reduce the tax they pay. For example they may lie about their business mileage, business expenses or even medical contributions.

* People simply don’t submit a tax return to Sars or fail to truthfully respond to Sars questions.

* Employers sometimes deduct tax from employees and never pay it over to Sars.

* Businesses sometimes charge VAT and never pay it over to Sars.

If you would like to report non-compliance then please use the tax online form, which can be downloaded from the Sars website (https://www.sars.gov.za/).
