Station commander chases down suspected robbers

A morning call saw the Boksburg North SAPS station commander, Col Sam Makama, being actively involved in chasing down and arresting four suspects in an attempted robbery incident at Summer Place on July 29.

After receiving a call regarding an attempted business robbery on the Monday morning, the commander, together with detectives and uniformed members of the Boksburg North SAPS, rushed to the crime scene.

According to Lieut Juanita Coetzer, communications officer for the Boksburg North SAPS, on the arrival of the police, the suspects ran into different directions.

“The police managed to quickly catch and arrest one of the suspects while the search for the remaining suspects continued with members of the police looking in and around the vicinity.

“In an attempt to run from the police, one of the suspects tried to hi-jack a vehicle and shot at the driver who was fortunate enough to have not been hurt in the process,” says Coetzer.

She explains that the Col Makama, Detective Branch Commander Lieut-Col Peter Kgomo, and Lieut-Col Mark Naidoo chased down the three suspects and were able to catch the men a while after the chase begun.

“Two unlicensed firearms were also recovered from the suspects, one 9mm Star pistol with three live rounds and one 9mm Norinco with six live rounds.

“The serial numbers on the firearms were all filed off and five cellphones were also recovered from the suspects,” says Coetzer.

In the process of chasing the suspects, a police member was involved in a head on collision with another private vehicle.

“The police officer was driving a state-marked vehicle with blue lights on when a private vehicle crashed into the police van.

“Neither of the people involved in the accident were seriously injured,” says Coetzer.
