VEC and Sanca tackle youth drug abuse

In response to rumours of students apparently from Ekurhuleni West Campus (EWC) Boksburg, using drugs and alcohol, the Boksburg Victim Empowerment Centre (VEC), along with Sanca Eastern Gauteng visited EWC Boksburg to speak to the hundreds of students about the risks of drug use.

It is alleged that dozens of students from the school use drugs and alcohol on a weekly basis, near the Boksburg railway station, as Plantation residents look on.

According to Flora Molope of the Boksburg VEC, their aim is to identify the substance abusers among the students, then take actions to help them.

“To prevent the irreversible damage from drug addiction, early identification of drug abuse and aiding the rehabilitation of users is what we are trying to achieve,” says Molope.

Molope states that while the path to drug addiction among students begin with the voluntary act of taking drugs, over time, a person’s ability to choose not to do so becomes compromised, and seeking and consuming the drug becomes compulsive.

“Specially trained counsellors from Sanca and VEC employees are always available and ready to help. If you are concerned about drug abuse by student in your school, please call the Boksburg SAPS VEC during office hours on 011 841 6874.”
