Eighty-one-year-old woman killed during robbery

Police have arrested a 38-year-old man for allegedly killing an 81-year-old Reiger Park woman, on Sunday night, July 7.

Police found Ellen Oliphant’s body lying in a pool of blood in her house, with an injury to her face.

Police believe the suspect killed the elderly woman by hitting her with a brick before strangling her, in what appears to be a robbery.

An undisclosed amount of money was stolen.

The man was charged with murder and made his first court appearance on Tuesday, July 9.

He was remanded in custody and was expected to return to court on Tuesday, July 16, for a formal bail application.

In another incident, police arrested a man after he had allegedly severely beaten another man in the Delmore informal settlement.

The victim was rushed to Tambo Memorial Hospital, with serious injuries to his head and right arm.

According to a police report, the victim went to the suspect’s shack to borrow matches from the suspect’s wife, but what he received vicious beating.
