Two eco-friendly crafts that your child will enjoy making

The recycling bin can double as a treasure chest for kids’ crafts and, best of all, will keep your children entertained while practicing social distancing and staying at home. Recycled materials can be transformed into works of art with a little creativity and imagination. Best of all, they won’t cost you a cent!

Here are two simple crafts you can make with your children today using recycled objects you have around the house or garage.

Make your own bowling pins from old tin cans

What you’ll need:

• Empty cans (equal-sized heights and sizes are best)
• Enamel paint or metal paint (avoid poster paint as it will flake off)

How to make bowling tin cans

1. Check that the cans are clean and free of sharp edges.
2. Use paint to decorate the cans (we recommend using a can of spray paint to achieve a smooth, even finish).
3. Stack the cans on top of each other, in the shape of a pyramid.
4. Have fun bowling the cans over with a ball.

Make a colourful rocket

What you’ll need:

• Paper towel tubes or toilet paper rolls (stacked into one another)
• Paint
• Scissors
• Utility knife

How to make your own rocket

1. Draw your windows on your cardboard tube.
2. Cut only the top and sides, creating a flap to bend forward (making the platform for your LEGO man to stand on).
3. Cut four slits into the tip of the tube, so that you’re able to bend and shape it into a rocket tip.
4. Cut three tail fins / wings (using our template).
5. Cut a top slit (to secure the rocket into position).
6. Paint your rocket and enjoy hours of play.
