Pike: Coronavirus situation a shame!

Clubs are still waiting for the East Rand rugby's governing body, to give them the go-ahead to start training, but yes, things do not look very well.

With rugby being one of the most hard-hit sports by the global coronavirus pandemic, coaches, players and fans from Boksburg’s two premier club rugby sides, East Rand United and the Makopano Boksburg Rugby Club, remain in limbo.

Despite the country’s governing body of the game, the South African Rugby Union (Saru) announcing some good news on a national and international forum side of things, including news that the 2021 British & Irish Lions Tour to South Africa is still on, amateur rugby remains in the dark.

When speaking to the Advertiser about the latest developments at Prince George Park, which looks like a forlorn landscape these days, Makopano Boksburg Rugby Club captain Henry Pike seemed hapless of the ongoing situation.

“There’s nothing as of yet, we have spoken to the coaches and they’re also not sure on their side. They said they have to wait for the Valke [Rugby Union] (VRU), which is the East Rand rugby’s governing body, to give us the go-ahead to start training, but yes, things do not look very well.

“I don’t know if there’ll be any rugby for us this year, which I think is really a big shame because we had a good team. A team that could compete at the top this year, but yes, we’ve asked them and they are waiting on the Valke or Saru to inform them.

“With word from the game’s top hierarchy still a no-show, it automatically affects Owls neighbours East Rand United, who have appeared to make the most of the enforced hiatus by bolstering their ranks in preparation of the game’s eventual return.”

“There is nothing that I know of,” confirmed United’s secretary, Monique Ganzwyk. Everything is still standing still at the moment.

“The Owls and United both play their respective trades under the VRU.”
