#Lockdown: Swimmer’s nationals hopes dashed

Boksburg swimming star Kian Keylock’s build-up to the South African Junior Nationals, which were scheduled to take place at his best swimming ground, Kings Park in Durban this month, has been spoiled by the national lockdown.

The junior nationals, one of Keylock’s best hunting tournaments, have had to be put off like most, if not everything else in life, amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

This has foiled Keylock’s plans of continuing to set the standard in his u-14 category.

In a recent video posted on WhatsApp on day 11 of the lockdown, the CBC Boksburg aquatic star said: “I’m extremely disappointed that the nationals were cancelled as I had big hopes in winning a number of gold medals and breaking many SA records.”

He does, however, see the silver-lining to the enforced break.

“But this only means I can train harder and get faster for when nationals finally come.”

Coached by respected mentor Wade Marshall in local aquatic circles, Keylock would’ve come in the nationals in perfect shape having broken the South African u-14 boys 50m breaststroke record at the Grand Prix Invitational Swimming meet in Durban earlier this year.

The CBC Boksburg swimmer cleared the pool and blitzed to a finish of 30:24 seconds, cancelling the previous mark of 30:37 set in 2016 by Joshua Hamilton.

Keylock is the current holder of the boys u-14 50 and 100m national breaststroke records.
