Summer Heat can open many doors for new talent

Carnival City plays host to the Gauteng East Rand auditions for the annual Summer Heat Model and Talent Search, on January 29.

This will be the fourth time that Carnival City has provided the stage for this popular national talent search, now in its eighth year.

The Summer Heat Model and Talent Search 2017 Gauteng East Rand audition will be hosted in the Rio Rooms at Carnival City.

Auditions are by appointment only. Emerging models, singers, dancers and actors have until January 26 to apply for an audition.

East Rand hopefuls can apply by emailing summerheatinfo@gmail.com. Entries will be assessed and will be advised, if they are approved to audition.

At the audition, approved contestants may enter one or more of the individual categories – or for a group performance.

They will also have the opportunity to participate in a highly informative workshop and a photo shoot.

There are no age limitations for any of the singing, dancing, acting or modelling categories.

There is no height or other restrictions for models either.

At the audition, scouts for the International Arts Talent Showcase are present to assess the contestants.

The selected few who stand out will be invited to perform at this showcase where international scout, talent manager and director of ARTS USA, Kim Myers, will be present.

Should they impress Myers, they will be invited to represent South Africa in the USA.

They will be spending two weeks in New York and Orlando, Florida, performing in front of representatives from major international model agencies, casting directors, managers and movie studios from across the globe – who are on the hunt for fresh talent.

Added to that, every contestant also has the opportunity of being evaluated to audition for potential scholarships, to study at the New York Film Academy and other tertiary institutes in the USA and Europe.

Finalists from each regional audition will be invited to participate in a five-day workshop, in preparation for the National Summer Heat Gala Final Awards later in the year. Finalists will gain vital workplace information through various workshops, photo shoots and fun team building exercises that allow contestants to become part of the supportive Summer Heat family.

Michelle Smith, the Marketing Manager at Carnival City, said: “We proudly support credible campaigns to unearth and nurture performing arts talent.

“The Summer Heat Model and Talent Search is entrenched as a credible channel for discovering new talent – and a launching-pad for performers to pursue their dreams of a career in the performing arts.

“We look forward to the auditions at the end of the month.”

Since the inception of Summer Heat Model and Talent Search, numerous contestants have been scouted by international scouts to travel to Orlando, Florida, USA for the prestigious Arts showcase.

According to Gillian Habib, who organizes the talent search, many contestants from the previous seven years of Summer Heat events have carved out careers within the performance industry or found success – both locally and internationally – in the music, television and film industries.

Previous competitors have released their own CDs; received scholarships for major New York and Los Angeles film schools; appeared on television, in films and music videos both locally and internationally; featured on billboards and in magazines.

One of the younger contestants from Cape Town, landed a feature role in a major movie starring Ethan Hunt.

A number of the Summer Heat Models have walked the runway at SA Fashion Week and New York Fashion Week and appeared on F-TV.

Most recently a previous titleholder, who now lives and works as a TV presenter in Los Angeles, was seen interviewing celebrities on the Red Carpet at the Golden Globe awards after party. Another, who lives in Hollywood, has had a movie that she wrote, directed and acted in, submitted for various international film festivals

She said: “We’re thrilled to be visiting this incredible venue again and can’t wait to see the spectacular show of talent, by local performers and models.”
