Group F
Argentina: Lionel Messi
He may have somewhat had an under-par season for his standards in a trophy-less campaign for Barcelona but the Argentine genius still managed to net close to one goal per match last season.
He will once again be the focal point for the Albiceleste who arguably boast the most lethal attack going into the tournament, which also includes Sergio Aguero, Angel di Maria and Gonzalo Higuain.
Already mentioned in the same breath as Diego Maradona and Pele as one of the game’s all-time greats, the 26-year-old has recently admitted that he’s jealous of his predecessors’ accomplishments on the international stage.
Should his burning desire to lift the game’s most prestigious trophy trigger the kind of form he’s known for, expect Messi and the Albiceleste to be among the semi-finalists, at least.
Bosnia and Herzegovina: Edin Dzeko
Manchester City manager, Manuel Pellegrini’s preference of Edin Dzeko over Alvaro Negredo in the latter stages of last season was justified by the Bosnia front-man who scored a handful of vital goals for the club, including a brace in City’s penultimate match against Aston Villa.
The eventual 4-0 route on Villa ensured that The Sky Blues would need only a draw in their final game to secure the Premier League.
A continuation of his fine performances, which Jose Mourinho said were enough for the striker to win the footballer of the year award instead of Luis Suarez, will give Bosnia that much hope on claiming second spot in Nigeria’s expense, with Argentina expected to finish top.
Iran: Reza Ghoochannejhad
The Iranian’s could have a lot of influence on the final shape of this group provided they take some points off their more fancied group rivals. Should that be the case, the Charlton Athletic forward is most likely to lead the party-spoiling.
Nigeria: Shola Ameobi
The Super Eagles are widely regarded as the African nation who will go furthest in the tournament. In a group including Bosnia and Iran; and Ameobi’s fine form for country, Stephen Keshi’s men certainly stand a good chance in advancing past the group stages. – @SabeloBoksburg
