Local rider to represent SA at world challenge final

Fairleads show-jumper Victoria Greyvensteyn is on cloud nine after receiving her first-ever national call-up following an incredible riding year.

Greyvensteyn was selected by the South African Equestrian Federation (SAEF) to represent SA at the International Federation for Equestrian Sports (FEI) Jumping World Challenge final in Tashkent, Uzbekistan from October 22 to 27.

According to the FEI, the competition is part of the World Challenge Series, a development competition allowing amateur athletes who can’t travel to partake in international competitions to have the opportunity to compete internationally without having to leave their countries.

Greyvensteyn and Divan Bosman were the highest-placed South Africans in the series after their successful local season and qualified for the final.

Commenting on what this means to her, Greyvensteyn explained she’s extremely happy because her goal has always been to receive her protea colours and represent SA internationally.

“The long hours of training are always worth it, especially now that I’m training harder to improve my skills. I’ve gone from doing poles on the ground to jumping at the top level of the sport,” she said.

Earlier this year, Greyvensteyn and her thoroughbred mare, Sunny Park Classic Queen, won the SA Junior Grand Prix during the Toyota Easter Festival with a double clear over 1.35m.

She performed well during the Gauteng champs and podiumed at the South African Derby.

“This opportunity means so much to me. I will forever be grateful for it. I hope to make SA proud,” said Greyvensteyn.

Confirming the rider’s selection, the SAEF secretary-general, Sharlene Venter, congratulated the Ashton International College learner for making the cut, saying it’s well deserved.

“This is a great honour for a young rider as Victoria and we are sure she will make SA proud,” she said.
