Owls at the foot of the table in the Valke league

The new club management is working on restoring the dignity of the club.

Things are not looking good for the Boksburg Rugby Club in the Valke Peregrine League.

Having played eight matches in the league, the team is rooted to the foot of the table in the league, with only one point. This comes after having lost all the league matches and it doesn’t appear to have any chance of improvement judging from its latest loss against Vereeniging Rugby Club at PG Park on August 17.

While Boksburg’s U21 won 44-26 against Vereeniging, the first team lost 93-7 against Vereeniging and the second team lost 54-12. The U21 team is through to the semi-finals and will now play against Brakpan at Brakpan Bosman Rugby Stadium on August 24.

Challenges

There have been some problems after the team lost key members and players to other local teams, prompting an early AGM and management overhaul recently. However, management is working on restoring the dignity of the club.

According to the new secretary of the club, Maritza Botha, the members left due to unforeseen circumstances. She said this included the chairperson, vice chairperson, president, facility manager and three other members.

The new committee that was elected are Lex Thorpe (president), Hendrik Harmse (chairperson), Andre de Klerk (vice chairperson) and Drikus Myburgh (treasurer).

Botha said the new committee members have been part of the club for many years. “They have the club’s best interest at heart.”

Apart from losing committee members, Botha said the club also lost several key players. “Many of the players joined local teams including Elsburg Rugby Club, this year, which is also frustrating. However, we have managed to recruit new players,” she said.

Botha said that she is positive about the club’s future. “We are now working on rebuilding the club, and things are already starting to look good.”

The secretary said the club is still struggling to get sponsors. Anybody who wants to get involved with the club may contact Botha on 082 945 8409.
