Ekon Kai karateka shine at tournament

The atmosphere was electric, filled with the sounds of cheers and encouragement from supporters, especially the parents who attended to witness their children in action for the first time.

Young fighters from Ekon Kai Karate Club proudly represented the dojo at the Kyokushin Kan tournament held at the Vosloorus Civic Centre on August 10.

Shihan Moeti Holomo, the founder of Ekon Kai Karate, said they brought eight dedicated athletes to compete, showcasing their skills and determination in a highly competitive environment.

“The tournament was a vibrant display of martial arts, with participants from various dojos showcasing their prowess. Ekon Kai Karate’s fighters showed exceptional technique, discipline, and sportsmanship throughout the event.”

Holomo expressed immense pride in his team’s performance, stating, “Each fighter showed remarkable dedication and resilience.

“The support from their parents added a new level of motivation, and it was heart-warming to see families come together to cheer on our young karateka.”

The results of the tournament were nothing short of impressive, with four of Ekon Kai Karate’s fighters earning medals in their respective categories:

Girls’ division

Latita Ndaka showcased her skills and determination, finishing in third place.

Relebohile Mahlasela emerged as the standout performer of the day, clinching first place in her category.

Boys’ division

Hlelo Maqinana fought valiantly and secured second place. His matches were filled with thrilling exchanges and he displayed a strong understanding of Kyokushin techniques that impressed both judges and spectators alike.

Sethu Mbekwa achieved second place, showcasing his skill and determination in a tough bracket. His performance was marked by his strategic fighting style and resilience, making him a formidable opponent.

After the tournament, many parents expressed their commitment to attending future events, promising to support their children as they continue their martial arts journey.

“This newfound enthusiasm among families is expected to create a more supportive environment for the young athletes, helping them to thrive both in and out of the dojo.”

As Ekon Kai Karate looks to the future, Holomo is optimistic about the growth and development of his fighters.

“This tournament is just the beginning. With the support of their families and the hard work they put in at training, I believe our young athletes will continue to excel and achieve great things in karate,” he said.
