Brave boy’s zest for life is an inspiration

Jandré is remembered for living life to the fullest.

Young cancer patient Jandré van Coller (8) of Boksburg made an immense impact on many lives.

This is according to his father, Pierre, who spoke at Jandré’s funeral service at AGS Brakpan-Wes on July 23.
Jandré died on July 17.

He was diagnosed with early precursor acute lymphoblastic leukaemia for the first time in 2019. He was healthy until the doctors again diagnosed cancer on July 1.
The atmosphere was sombre as Jandré was laid to rest at the Brakpan Cemetery.

In a tribute to his son, Pierre thanked everyone who was part of Jandré’s journey.

“You don’t know how much of an inspiration you were. You are the reason that he was the person he was. I will always be thankful for that.

“We are here to celebrate the life of Jandré, even though it hurts. Our hearts are sore, but we know he is now happier than ever,” said Pierre, who could not hold back his tears.
Pierre said Jandré loved sport and being active.

“He had a passion for rugby and playing games with his brother.

“His zest for life was contagious. He could see the positive in every situation and made us laugh. He was so protective of his big brother and always felt proud of him.

“One of my many precious memories of Jandré is when he and his brother played hide and seek when I got home. He often hid behind the curtains.

“There was nothing he could not do successfully. Jandré excelled in academics, sports and culture. This would have been his second year in the choir. He had a remarkable voice,” said Pierre.

Pierre said Jandré’s loving nature brought people together.

“Jandré loved Jesus and Bible stories. He showed us not to stand back for anything.”

Angélique, Jandré’s mother, recalled the glorious day he was born.

“I was afraid I would not love you as much as your brother, but I lost my heart to you.

“Our world came to a standstill when you were diagnosed with cancer for the first time but you became an example of someone who fights with grace. You taught us a lot.
“Even though we miss you a lot, we have peace in the grace God showed us.

“We love you, and our hearts are in pain from missing you. However, we know you are waiting for us to join you.
“We know you have peace and that was your decision, as you told me you are done.”
