Boksburg communities united to honour Nelson Mandela’s legacy through various uplifting events on July 18.

Tshepo Ya Sechaba hosted an uplifting event for 20 children from Salima crèche.

The gathering, which took place on July 18, was filled with joy as the children sang and danced alongside older community members, creating a vibrant atmosphere of intergenerational connection and celebration.

The founder of the organisation, Cynthia Nhlapho, said the highlight of the day was when the children performed the South African anthem, Nkosi sikelela iAfrika, with remarkable enthusiasm and harmony.

This moment resonated deeply, showcasing the spirit of unity and respect for the legacy of Nelson Mandela, who dedicated his life to the fight for equality and justice.

In addition to the musical performances, the event provided a nourishing lunch and party packs for the children.

Dawn Park SAPS

The police station, in collaboration with the Police and Security Association (PSA), local cleaners, and traffic wardens, hosted a cleaning campaign at the Dawn Police Station.

The initiative, led by the station commander Colonel LT Sibushi Makgakga, emphasised the importance of maintaining a clean and compliant environment for the community.

According to Sergeant Nkemeleng Mabula, the spokesperson for the police station, the members worked diligently as a team, focusing on areas from the parking lot to the Community Service Centre (CSC) and various office spaces, ensuring a thorough deep clean.

“We participated in the gardening efforts, highlighting the belief that first impressions matter significantly, and cleanliness plays a crucial role in that perception.

“This cleaning initiative will become a monthly programme, reinforcing commitment to serving the community in comfortable and welcoming conditions.

Warrant Officer Mongalo thanked all participants for their contributions to making the Dawn Park SAPS a cleaner and more inviting place for the community.

Reiger Park Library

The library hosted a drawing session where learners from schools in Reiger Park created portraits of Nelson Mandela.

Piet Mabapa from the library said, alongside the artistic activities, they shared inspiring stories about Mandela’s life, emphasising his journey from prisoner to president and his relentless fight for justice and equality.

Ulundi and Phuthasechaba Preschool

The children from this preschool and daycare made a meaningful impact in their community by visiting Asibavikele Child Welfare in Villa Liza on July 19.

In honour of Nelson Mandela’s birthday, the children and staff donated clothes, sanitary towels, and food to support the welfare of vulnerable children and families in the area.

During their visit, the group dedicated 67 minutes symbolic of Mandela’s 67 years of service to humanity, to assist an elderly resident with cleaning tasks around her yard and home.

The act of service not only honoured Mandela’s legacy but also fostered a spirit of community and care among the participants.
