Cultivating rare orchids and nurturing a community of passionate growers

With several branches across the province, Marvellous Orchid Shop aims not just to sell these exquisite plants but to educate customers on their unique care requirements.

Since its inception in 2022, Marvellous Orchid Shop in Boksburg has become a cherished haven for orchid enthusiasts.

Known for its diverse array of orchid species, the shop caters to both novice and experienced growers.

With several branches across the province, Marvellous Orchid Shop aims not just to sell these exquisite plants but to educate customers on their unique care requirements through regular workshops.

Tamlyn Roets and Virginia Shabangu of Marvellous Orchid Shop.

Retailer of the shop Tamlyn Roets said their goal is to provide a comprehensive understanding of how orchids grow, where they come from and the specific care each species requires.

“These workshops are interactive and hands-on, ensuring that participants leave with practical skills and knowledge,” said Roets.

“Participants of the workshops also enjoy exclusive discounts on their purchases, making it a win-win for those eager to expand their orchid collections.

“Many customers include individuals who received orchids as gifts are unsure how to maintain them.

“We provide enough information to get started, but the workshops offer a deeper dive, led by experts who cover the nuances of orchid care.”

As orchids are not native to South Africa, most of the shop’s orchids are imported from countries like Taiwan and Thailand.

“These plants are considered novelties due to their unique characteristics and growing requirements, setting them apart from typical garden plants.

“Orchids have no true equivalent in the plant world. Their leaves, roots and stems are distinct, and the overall care they need is unlike any other plant.

“Orchids are cultivated from seedlings in their native Asian environments, benefiting from the ideal conditions there before being imported to South Africa.

“Once they are robust enough to adapt to various weather conditions, they are made available in stores,” she said.
Roets said one particularly fascinating species is the Phalaenopsis orchid.

“These orchids grow only two leaves a year, allowing enthusiasts to estimate their age by counting the leaves. Marvellous Orchid Shop ensures that all Phalaenopsis orchids sold are at least four years old.”

Roets added that orchids have a personality as they prefer humid environments with good air circulation.

“While you don’t need to replicate their natural habitat perfectly, it’s important to avoid extreme temperatures.”
The shop recommends using a fertiliser, which is sold at the store.

“These enhance the health and growth of the orchids, and detailed guidance on their use is provided during the workshops.”

Roets said the orchid market is expanding, driven by the plant’s exotic appeal and unique care requirements.

“You can’t find orchids just anywhere. They need to be sought out, adding to their allure,” she explained.

“Our workshops offer an excellent starting point for those new to orchids and a valuable resource for seasoned growers looking to deepen their expertise.”

The shop is on the premises of Lots of Pots in North Rand Road. Follow them on Facebook: Marvellous Orchid – Boksburg.
