Collect your impounded vehicle before it’s disposed of

If you cannot afford to pay the pound fees, you may apply to the CoE chief of police for a reduction of the fees.

Did the EMPD impound your vehicle before January 2024, and is it still at the impound yard?

If you answer yes, the city urges you to make the necessary arrangements to retrieve your car from its facilities across the city by July 12 because vehicles not collected before 15:00 on July 12 will be at risk of disposal.

According to the metro, about 141 vehicles are kept at the EMPD pounds. Some were impounded after they were involved in accidents, for contravening the National Road Traffic Act 93 of 1996 or breaching the city’s by-laws.

Owners wishing to retrieve their vehicles must provide these items:
• Vehicle registration certificate;
• Proof of ownership;
• Identity document;
• Pound fees.
Municipal inspectors said the pound fees differ from one vehicle to another because they mostly depend on the factors and circumstances surrounding the impoundment of the respective vehicle.
However, when an owner cannot afford to pay the pound fees, they must apply to the CoE chief of police for a reduction of the fees.

The city reiterated that it would dispose of vehicles not claimed before the abovementioned date.
The pounds are open between 08:00 and 15:00 from Monday to Friday.
