Urban Ruins hosted a fundraiser to renovate the ground and play area at its site, on June 5.
Sponsored by Birchwood Spur and the Humanity Foundation, the event drew significant community support and raised a commendable amount for the project.
The fundraiser, held at the Boksburg Birchwood Spur, saw a unique approach to fundraising.
According to Clayton Viljoen, the founder of Urban Ruins, “People were billed between 10% and 15% of what they ordered to be donated to the organisation.

“The support was overwhelming, and the restaurant was full of generous patrons. Our target was R7 000, and we are thrilled to have nearly met it.”
“In addition to the contributions from dining, the event featured a silent auction and a raffle, adding more excitement and avenues for donations.
“Attendees eagerly participated, further boosting the funds raised for the renovation efforts.
“The proceeds will go to renovating the grounds and play area of an early childhood development (ECD) centre located on the premises,” Viljoen explained, emphasising the importance of providing a safe and engaging environment for the ECD.
Pierre Marneweck of the Humanity Foundation, which played a crucial role in promoting the event, expressed his organisation’s strong connection with Urban Ruins.
“Urban Ruins is like an adopted home to us. We have a strong relationship with them, which is why we are here to support them.
“Their mission aligns perfectly with ours. Clayton’s passion and dedication resonated with us, and his plans for the funds are inspiring,” said Marneweck.

Darrel Gower, the manager of Birchwood Spur, shared his enthusiasm for the project.
“Clayton approached me months ago with this idea, and it resonated with Spur’s motto of community involvement.
“Urban Ruins is an NPO in Boksburg, and we are also based here. The local community is important to us, and we help where we can,” said Gower.

Urban Ruins will host a golf day on August 29 to continue raising funds for a corporate partner they lost as a sponsor.
“The goal is to raise R200 000 until the mushroom farm they started last year becomes profitable.
