Humour is the secret to longevity says 96-year-old

The resident spent her special day with family and friends.

Having a good sense of humour is one Sylvia Plevin secrets to a long and happy life.

The Cosmos Old Age Home resident celebrated her 96th birthday on April 17.

Apart from a back fracture, Sylvia is as fit as a fiddle.

She grew up in England and immigrated to South Africa in 1968, and lived in Durban before moving to Boksburg a few years ago.

Sylvia, a former business woman, said surrounding herself with people who love and care about her helped her in life.

She was blessed with three children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

“I have also met wonderful friends on life’s journey. These important people give me a reason to get up in the morning,” she said.
Apart from spending time with loved ones, Sylvia believes in being cheerful.

“I don’t believe in moping. My sense of humour got me through difficult times. Everybody’s got problems, they don’t want to hear about mine as well.”
Furthermore, she is passionate about reading, writing, knitting and sewing.

“I also love animals. I would’ve had a property where I could as many animals as possible if I was a millionaire,” said Sylvia.

Her advice to the younger generation: “Find a significant other who is also willing to be a good friend.”
