New charity shop opens its doors
The store offers a wide range of high-end thrift items as well as products made by beneficiaries.
Hanna Charity and Empowerment Foundation opened its first East Rand thrift shop at @Lifestyle on James Shopping Centre, Fairleads, on April 6.
Founded by Hanna Grobler, wife of Afrikaans singer and songwriter Bok van Blerk, the foundation has for the past 16 years embedded itself in underprivileged communities across the country, assisting and empowering residents through skills development programmes, foundation phase learning as well as sustainable feeding schemes.
According to Charlene Jackson, executive director for the organisation, it is their vision to offer more than just sporadic hand-outs.
“We want to restore dignity and assist the poorest of the poor to stand on their own two feet, making a living using their newly acquired skills,” said Jackson.
“Our thrift shops assist in raising much needed funds for our ongoing projects.
“Supporters of the shop can look forward to finding high-end gems on the racks, at bargain prices, as well as the opportunity to purchase items that have been produced by our beneficiaries.”
The organisation is currently working with members of the Boksburg North community as well as those living in the Sonop Caravan Park, Farrarmere.
