No service delivery kicks up a stink

The SPCA said the matter has been resolved after engaging with various stakeholders and the ward councillor.

The CoE confirmed a lack of vehicles to collect carcasses from the Boksburg SPCA caused the stench near the Boksburg society.

According to metro spokesperson Zweli Dlamini, the issue, now resolved, was compounded by the long queues at the landfill site.

“The SPCA is serviced on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. We use a compactor allocated to shops and restaurants to collect normal refuse, and on its way to the landfill site, it will be collected at the SPCA. When the depot struggles with compactors, a skip loader is used first thing in the morning and will go directly to the Platkop landfill site.

“The Boksburg depot has arranged with Platkop personnel that the truck will not join the queue at the disposal site,” said Dlamini.
The Boksburg SPCA issued a press release regarding the unpleasant smell.

Manager Vicky Finnemore said the issue was resolved after urgent engagement with the various stakeholders and ward councillor.

“Furthermore, we have implemented measures at our cost to enable us to deal effectively with any future issues of non-delivery of waste services,” Finnemore explained.

Finnemore said the society is not experiencing any foul odour or backlog problems with the Ekurhuleni Waste Department.

“We thank the public for their support and understanding. We assure everyone that we will continue to render the best possible service to the community and the animals in our care.”
Ward 32 Clr Marius de Vos said the putrid odour was terrible and hampered learning and teaching at St Dominic’s Catholic School for Girls.

“The principal contacted me on Monday to express his dismay at the continuing situation and contemplated taking legal action. To date, I have not received any further complaints from residents or the school.

“The persistent heat wave over the past few days exacerbated the situation. I am keeping a close eye on the service to be rendered daily to the SPCA,” De Vos added.
