WARNING: Trichardts Road bridge area flooded again

Read on to see tips on how to stay safe in the rainy weather.

The stretch of Trichards Road underneath the railway bridge near the Boksburg Library was again flooded this morning, causing traffic chaos.

The City of Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) spokesperson William Ntladi, has warned motorists not to drive through flood-water, and steer clear of flooded areas. While those living in low-lying areas were advised to keep an eye on water levels so that they can evacuate in time should flooding occurs.

The Boksburg Advertiser visited the area this afternoon and found the road was flooded, but some cars, 4×4 vehicles and trucks still attempted to drive through it.

In light of the recurring flooding and sinkholes on Rondebult Road, drivers can expect traffic congestion on Pretoria Road in Comet and Plantation during the peak hours.

Motorists are urged to consider alternative routes when the stretch of Trichards Road underneath the railway bridge is flooded. Motorists can use other alternative routes, including the bridge near the SPCA, Wit Deep Road in Delmore or Van Dyk and Atlas Road.

Ntladi pointed out that DEMS rescue teams and firefighters are on high alert after the city experienced heavy downpours since the morning of November 7.

According Ntladi, teams are closely watching flood-prone areas around the city. This also includes low-lying bridges, informal and formal settlements next to the water streams, and the entire city in general where life-threatening emergencies can erupt.

Some safety hints to consider:
• Adults to collect children from schools, and walk them safely home.
• Pedestrians to avoid walking on flooded bridges where water is at ankle level.
• Motorists to avoid driving across low-lying bridges covered by water.
• Motorists to keep a good following distance from each other.
• Maintain a slower speed to avoid accidents.
• Roadworthiness of the vehicles is of paramount importance (Good tyre treads and wiper blades should be fully functional).
• Littering blocks stormwater drain systems, avoid littering at all costs.

In case of a life-threatening emergency, call 011 458 0911 such that the nearest rescue team can be dispatched for intervention.
