Academy boasts new consumer studies lab

The laboratory is not just about teaching traditional culinary skills; it embraces contemporary topics as well.

Sunward Christian Academy recently unveiled its state-of-the-art consumer studies laboratory, equipped with cutting-edge amenities.

School principal Leon van der Westhuizen explained it is set to revolutionise the way students learn essential life skills

The grand opening ceremony was attended by members of staff and guests, including Pastor Morne Kruger, Zanele Ramothwa and Lamulile Zulu, representing Word and Life Church and the school’s governing body, Umlasi and the Gauteng Department of Education.

Van der Westhuizen expressed his excitement for the opportunities this facility will bring to students, saying Sunward Christian Academy is dedicated to empowering students with practical knowledge that goes beyond the classroom.

“This state-of-the-art laboratory is a testament to that commitment. The inauguration of this laboratory marks a significant step towards empowering students with practical skills that will serve them throughout their lives, fostering self-sufficiency and responsible living in the modern world.

“The importance of practical education in consumer studies was emphasised. The laboratory’s modern design and comprehensive equipment signify a commitment to preparing students for a well-rounded life, not just academically but also in managing their households efficiently and being well-informed, responsible consumers,” the principal pointed out.

Van der Westhuizen added this fully equipped laboratory boasts a spacious kitchen area with top-of-the-line appliances, allowing students to hone their culinary skills, experiment with diverse recipes, and learn proper food safety and nutrition.

“The laboratory is not just about teaching traditional culinary skills; it embraces contemporary topics as well. A dedicated section focuses on financial literacy, providing students with the tools and knowledge to manage budgets, save and make informed financial decisions. Furthermore, entrepreneurial skills are taught using an in-depth year-long practical task.

“Students will also learn about eco-friendly household management, waste reduction, and sustainable consumer choices, aligning with global efforts to promote responsible living.”
