SANCA takes drugs awareness to Reiger Park

They were a lot of people who took part in the march.

As part of the SANCA Drug Awareness Week, SANCA Eastern Gauteng, which is based in Boksburg, took to the streets of Reiger Park with other organisations and residents on June 30.

Project manager Philiswe Buthelezi explained substance abuse is prevalent in the area.

“We hope to raise awareness through this march and change the drugs crisis the area faces, as well as help those who are addicted get sober. Substance abuse affects families,” she said.

The marchers show their placards with stop substance abuse messages.

Phinah Moholola, an auxiliary social worker at the Community of Hope Multi-purpose Centre (previously Reiger Park Community Crisis Centre), said they joined the march because they wanted to demonstrate that they have had enough of substance abuse.

“We are losing a lot of young people to substance abuse and we cannot just sit back and do nothing. The issue of substance abuse is real in Reiger Park. There are children as young as nine using drugs,” said Moholola

Auxiliary social worker at Ekupholeni Mental and Trauma Centre, Clementine Mthembu, reiterated that substance abuse is rife in Reiger Park.

“I have done many referrals to SANCA, which is always helpful. We support their march as it shows SANCA is serious about eradicating this scourge; it is encouraging,” she said.
