Foundation works hard to alleviate poverty

The foundation provides communities with an average of 1 482 meals daily.

The Tshisusu Foundation is an NPO with numerous programmes designed to alleviate the suffering of the most vulnerable.

The foundation, established in Parkdene, Boksburg, in 2018, was inspired by the biblical principles of James 1: 27, Psalms 68:5 and Job 29:12.

According to the client liaison officer, Monique Du Toit, they aim to extend their reach of basic necessities.

Food packages for the soup kitchen were ready for collection by the soup kitchen runners.

The name ‘Tshisusu’ is derived from the Tshivenda word for ‘butterfly’, and they believe in transforming lives through the principles of evolving and rebuilding future leaders.

The organisation runs many projects, such as a soup kitchen, upskilling their volunteers and community individuals, distributing food hampers and cleaning the Boksburg area.

“We run nine soup kitchens across the East Rand, sustaining the communities with an average of 1 482 meals daily,” said Du Toit.

Willem Toorn, Simphiwe Simelane, Lerato Simelane and Randall Russell.

She said their primary focus was to provide at least one nutritious meal daily to needy people, adding that they distributed food hampers to 65 households, three charities and 15 individuals.

“We empower young women, children and our volunteers with vital skills such as communication, cooking, hospitality and people management.

“Our projects also include a team of four who do the clean-up activities on the streets and municipal grounds of the Boksburg area. The necessary equipment is given to them,” said Du Toit.

Du Toit added that on June 15, the organisation and various stakeholders handed out 2 000 hotdogs, cold drinks and sanitary pads to girls across the East Rand area, including Windmill Park and Rieger Park Central.

She further said they were initiating a winter drive to provide warm blankets to those who lack adequate protection against the cold. She added that they are launching their soup kitchen at their premises to prepare ready-to-distribute meals easily.

Food hampers wait to be collected and distributed to beneficiaries.

“To sustain and expand our projects, we seek partnerships with businesses and individuals who share our vision to make a substantial impact on the lives of the less fortunate,” said Du Toit.
