Sporting claim U21 tourney

“The tournament had an extremely high standard as most of the top U21 teams from the province took part."

West Rand Sporting walked away with the winner’s trophy and prize money after a 1-0 win over Reiger Park United in the final of the Astroplex U21 six-a-side tournament on June 24 in Lakefield.

After a walk in the park in the round-robin, Sporting beat the Fairy Princesses 2-1 in the last four.

Reiger Park’s road to the final included a hotly contested semi-final against local rivals Juventus who they won 1-0.

The final was another close encounter, but in the end Sporting held their nerves to bag the win and walk away with the R5 000 prize money while Reiger Park settled for runners-up honours.

According to Astroplex Benoni chairperson Abdul Rehman Sibda, the football on the day created an exciting environment because of the teams’ technical and tactical astuteness.

“The tournament had an extremely high standard, as most of the top U21 teams from the province took part. It was well supported and the exuberance from the fans added to the atmosphere,” Rehman Sibda said.
