St Francis are Sowetan quiz masters

The quiz, launched in February, required the learners to read Sowetan newspapers delivered to the schools daily until May 26.

St Francis College learners are the champions of the inaugural Sowetan and SA Home Loans School Quiz after the school’s general knowledge club pipped Inkonjane Junior Secondary School in the final on May 27.

The team, comprising head girl Atlehang Mokoena, deputy head girl Grace Kabongo, Sibongakonke Ndhlela and Zibusiso Nkosi and substitute Ntondoyenkosi Nxumalo, beat 31 other schools to the title.

The school walked away with the R50 000 prize money, an educational bursary provided by Afhco Africa Housing valued at R50 000, Vaya sneakers and shopping vouchers.

“It was challenging because most of our children aren’t used to reading, especially newspapers. Getting them into the mood to take a newspaper and read every section was a bit challenging. I’m glad we managed to pull through,” said their mentor, Asere Ncube.

Ncube, also an English teacher, said the competition gave the learners a rounded view of what constitutes news, adding that it also showed them the significance of being informed.

“It’s vital because our Grade 12 learners are going out into the world and might have to vote next year. Some of the questions were political. So this made them aware of the different political parties, their ideologies and whether they were aligned with their views.

“It was helpful and significant and made them appreciate what’s happening around them in terms of the economy and our relations with other countries.”

The quiz, launched in February, required the learners to read Sowetan newspapers delivered to the schools daily until May 26.

Kabongo said their preparation went smoothly because they realised early on which news item each member was adept at.

“This was effective because I didn’t realise so much was happening around me. It was an interesting experience. Even now, when I see headlines, I want to know more,” Kabongo said.

The school’s principal, Peter Steyn, congratulated Ncube and the learners on their achievement.

“It’s a fantastic achievement. It speaks to our vision of excellence and the commitment of our learners and teachers. We are proud of them,” said Steyn.

The school will enter the competition again next year.
