Woodlands hosts Junior Master Championships

Aspirant young golfers from schools across South Africa enjoyed the tournament.

Woodlands International College continued hosting some of SA’s most accomplished young golfers as part of its proud sporting heritage from May 14 to 16.

For the 11th consecutive year, the college presented the 2023 chapter of the Woodlands Junior Masters Championship, together with the Woodlands Primary School Golf Challenge, both of which teed off at the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club last Sunday, following the opening shot ceremony where Woodlands founding director Ronnie Matthews opened the championship.

This tournament is a premium event on the college’s golfing circuit when Woodlands entertains young golfers – boys and girls from schools across SA – for three days of competitive junior golf in pursuit of the Woodlands Junior Masters Individual and Team Champion titles.

Arguably the most visible school golfing event in SA, this year’s championship saw entries from Afrikaans Seuns Hoërskool, Curro Aurora, Hoërskool Waterkloof, Midstream College, Pretoria Boys High School, St David’s, St John’s College, Steyn City and Woodlands International College

Woodlands was delighted to again host the South African Golf Board Development Team, which entered six players (three boys from Soweto and three from Thembisa) in the championship.

The three days of play – aimed at cultivating the next generation of world-class SA golfers – was supported by former Springboks Owen Nkumane and Gcobane Bobo, who played alongside the players, and culminated in a prizegiving on Tuesday afternoon at which masters blazers and over R80 000 in prizes were bestowed upon the winners by Bobo: Balderstone Sports Institute (team champion), Vuyisani Makama from Balderstone Sports Institute (boy’s individual champion) and Keira Howroyd from Woodlands International College (girl’s individual champion ), who also received the Bruce Richie Robinson Award. Ryan Osborne (Steyn City) won the Woodlands Primary School Golf Challenge.
