NPO tackles youth unemployment

The young people trained in the programme will be eligible for employment.

The Edu-fun.org.za NPO, established in 2016 to impart skills to unemployed youth, recently launched the Edu-Youth programme.

According to the founder of Edu-fun.org.za, Serge ‘Coach Banana’ Katombe, the Edu-Youth programme offers educational courses, training, and job and life skills to young people.

“The programme will give the unemployed youth work experience. They will be absorbed by various companies to work in them,” said Katombe.

“We will collaborate with the local government, schools, NGOs, churches, community leaders, civil society, concerned citizens and interest groups in the programme. With this programme, we want to tackle the youth unemployment rate that’s at 45%,” said Katombe.

He said there are predictions that the youth unemployment rate will increase to 63.8% by the end of this quarter, and they are trying to prevent that from happening.

“For now, the skills we want to focus on imparting are sports coaching, cooking (hospitality), sales, IT, landscaping, photography, sowing, building (construction) and entrepreneurship.

“We have had workshops in different areas around Boksburg already, recruiting young unemployed people to be part of this life improvement programme.”

He added that Edu-fun.org.za is based in Sunward Park, and many young people had warmed up to it.

“The programme will improve many young people’s lives, even those who had given up on their lives,” explained the founder.
