Karatekas aim for glory at National Championships

The karatekas aim to bring medals home.

Thirty-three karatekas from the Goju Karate Academy are determined to do well in the World Union of Karate Federations (WUKF) South Africa National Championships and Africa Open in Gqeberha from March 31 to April 2.

They will compete in these karate categories: kata, team kata, kumite, rotational team kumite and kobudo (long and short weapons).

The sensei of Goju Karate Academy, Tarryn Madgwick, said there are more than 600 entries in the tournament from across the country, so they expect tough competition.

“Our athletes have trained extremely hard for this tournament, and we are excited to see them compete. They train five days a week and put more effort into their training sessions. I’m proud of them, and I hope their hard work pays off in the tournament. I wish them all the success they deserve,” said the sensei.

She believes her athletes will be mentally prepared because they always participate in karate tournaments.

“After we compete in the national championships, we will compete in the world championships in Scotland in July.
“Our main aim in the upcoming competition is to ensure that the karatekas enjoy themselves and learn in the process. We expect to bring a few medals home, then prepare for the one in July.”

Madgwick added that she believes a person must first love karate to excel at it.

“Mastering the sport is something the athletes should aim for, and they should only take winning as a bonus,” she explained.
