Man suspected of Uber hijackings, robberies in court

The man will appear in court on March 13.

A 20-year-old man suspected of a spate of hijackings and robberies of Uber drivers in the past month made his first appearance in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on March 3.

The matter was postponed to March 13 for a bail application. The suspect was arrested in Erica Street, Reiger Park, on March 2.

According to the Reiger Park SAPS spokesperson, Constable Johannes Msimanga, the man was arrested after one of his victims identified him to the police.

“When the suspect was arrested, he was in possession of an unlicensed firearm with the serial number removed and it was loaded with three rounds.”

The following cases were opened against the suspect at the Reiger Park Police Station: two cases of armed robbery, three of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, hijacking, kidnapping and possession of unlicenced firearm and ammunition.

Station commander Lieutenant Colone Bongani Dube said he is pleased a suspect has been arrested.
“We have been concerned about this spate of crimes in our area. I’m pleading with the community to not hide or protect criminals living among us,” he said.

Residents are urged to report all suspicious activity and continue to be the eyes and ears of the police.
