Boksburg CBD: Fire ravages cellphone shop

Fire crews in personal protective forced their way into the building where they worked to put out the fire

BOKSBURG – Four fire engines and 16 firefighters were deployed to the Boksburg CBD after a blaze threatened to cripple part of the business precinct as it erupted at a cellphone shop on January 16.

According to Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) spokesperson William Ntladi, a security officer drove to the nearby Boksburg Central Fire Station to report the fire at the building on the corner of Trichardts Road and Commissioner Street.

“Firefighters rushed to the scene where they found the shop well alight.

“Crews had to force their way into the locked structure and used high-pressure hoses to extinguish the blaze.
“Additional backup crews from Germiston and Wadeville fire stations also arrived to help fight the fire with two firefighting hose lines,” explained Ntladi.

After destroying the shop and its contents, the blaze was eventually extinguished, preventing it from spreading to the adjacent shops in the building.

Although there were no injuries, Ntladi pointed out that crews encountered challenges when the shop operators disregarded the precautionary measures by entering the burning structure, claiming they wanted to remove money from the safe.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
