Shoplifting suspect escapes from custody, rearrested

The woman managed to escape just as she was about to be taken to the cells.

A woman in her 30s was rearrested a few hours after escaping from the Boksburg North Police Station on January 5.

According to Boksburg North SAPS station commander, Colonel Mack Mngomezulu, the woman was apprehended for shoplifting at a store at the East Rand Mall.

“She was bought to the station where she managed to leave, just as she was supposed to be taken to the cells.

“More information about her escape can’t be divulged at the moment and an internal investigation is underway,” he said.

Mngomezulu highlighted that swift action from the police led to the rearrest of the woman.

“A special task team was established to track down the suspect. Police found her at her home and arrested her again,” he added.

The woman was also arrested last year after being caught stealing from the same shop at the mall.

She is now charged with shoplifting and escaping from custody and appeared in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on January 9.
