Report livestock on public roads

Livestock must be taken care of at all times.

The EMPD says residents should report livestock roaming public roads to the City of Ekurhuleni call centre on 086 054 3000.

Spokesperson Kelebogile Thepa said a fine of R500 or more can be issued for livestock obstructing a public road.

“Before we issue a fine, the livestock owner is warned about the problems the animals are causing and if the problem persists a fine will be imposed.

“However, should livestock be causing problems for the community within an appropriate grazing area, the owner will only be advised to hire a shepherd to monitor the animals. In instances where livestock is not overseen and taken care of, the city’s environmental health department will be notified.

“If necessary, the department will send officials to speak to the owner about the condition of the livestock and the SPCA will also be asked to assist,” Thepa explained.

She added that people are allowed to keep livestock in residential areas if the metro has earmarked them as farming zones.

“In addition to sheep and goats roaming roads like Main Reef Road, the EMPD monitored this road extensively between October 27 and November 7 and did not find livestock causing any traffic obstructions.

“We will continue to observe the area and this road in particular, and if we find unattended livestock, officers will trace the owner to warn them. “If the issue persists, the owner will be fined,” said Thepa.
