Write a short story set in Jozi

Your work could be featured in a live performance.

UJ Arts and Culture, along with the Johannesburg Institute for Advanced Study (JIAS) at the University of Johannesburg, are launching a writing competition.

They are calling on young writers to enter. Entrants will be required to write a short story, in any language, set in any of the public spaces in Johannesburg.

Submissions must not be longer than 4 000 words and can be in the form of fiction or non-fiction, in any literary form including poetry, prose, play or a film script.

Authors from all age groups are welcome but must not have been previously published.

The writing should describe, discuss or be set in a specific public space somewhere in greater Johannesburg.

Three entries will be selected by a panel, with each standing a chance of winning R2 000.

One piece will be chosen to be paired alongside an excerpt from an established literary work set in Johannesburg, with both texts being used as inspiration for a site-specific public performance to be produced by UJ Arts & Culture in May 2023.

The deadline for submissions is at midnight, November 30 and no late entries will be accepted.
