Langa hopes to impress at world cup training camp

She's part of a 25-player squad for the Momentum Proteas and an extended SA Emerging and domestic players training camp in East London.

Eastern Storm ladies wicketkeeper and opening batter Lerato Langa hopes to impress Momentum Proteas head coach Hilton Moreeng to be considered for selection to represent the country at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup next year.

Langa is part of Moreeng’s 25-member squad to attend a training camp in East London.

The camp will focus on sharpening the players’ bowling, batting and fielding technicalities before the global showpiece on home soil in February.

The 30-year-old is among the fresh faces in the camp.

Speaking to the Benoni City Times, she said while world cup selection is one of her targets, her main goal is to gain experience.

“It’s overwhelming. This kind of opportunity doesn’t just come to anyone. You have to put in the hard work behind the scenes in terms of training and improving your game,” she said.

An experienced campaigner with lots of innings under her belt, Langa always believed her extra sessions in the nets will eventually pay off.

Although this is not an official Proteas bow, she at least has one foot on the door.

“Sometimes when things don’t fall into place, you just lose hope. But I kept on believing that I am capable. If you want to be successful in anything that you do u got to be patient and put in extra work,” she said.

The Vosloorus native wants to inspire the next crop of female cricketers in the region.

She’s a firm believer in the current Cricket South Africa’s hub system which has led to increased participation of women in cricket.

“It does help to inspire young girls, especially in the townships. With me having made it this far as a girl who grew up in a small township, it will change their mindset and they will now realise that it’s not about where you come from but about your work ethic,” Langa said.

The camp started on November 1 and will conclude nine days later. The players will take part in eight intra-squad T20 matches at Buffalo Park Stadium.
