Gunman shot dead after ambushing an off-duty policewoman

The police are in a quest to find the robbers.

An off-duty female police officer shot one of three would-be robbers who tried to rob her of her belongings at gunpoint while walking along the R554 Road in Dawn Park on October 13.

According to SAPS national spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Robert Netshiunda, the officer was walking from a nearby shopping centre when she was approached by three men who threatened her with a firearm demanding her belongings.

Netshiunda explained that as one of the men was aiming a gun at her, the astute police officer grabbed her service pistol and shot the robber in the face.

“The suspect also fired shots at the victim, but all the bullets missed her,” explained Netshiunda.

Netshiunda said the gunman was declared dead on the scene, while his accomplices, two men, managed to flee on foot.

Police have launched a manhunt for them. The suspect’s firearm was found at the scene and IPID is investigating the incident. Preliminary investigations revealed that the deceased is a 25-year-old man from Germiston.
