Welkom SPCA in dire straits

There are very few applications for adoptions at Welkom SPCA.

The Welkom SPCA finds itself in dire straits and is struggling to make ends meet to continue being operational within its region, according to a media statement from the National Council of SPCAs.

Several months ago, Welkom SPCA’s bakkie broke down and required a refurbished engine.

Given that this bakkie is the SPCA’s main source of reaching animals in need, the SPCA has had to take out a loan to cover the expense of the refurbished engine.

In the interim, the society has been making use of their old 1400 bakkie to reach animals in need, however, due to the age and condition of the bakkie, it also requires a lot of maintenance, which is costly.

The increase in petrol price has also severely impacted the society.

They are experiencing a huge influx of unwanted, sick, stray and injured animals being left at their doorstep.

As a result, the SPCA has had to employ more staff to adequately care for the animals brought in.

In small towns such as Welkom, raising funds can be challenging.

Societies depend on their local community for funding to continue serving the animals and people within the community.

Adoptions are usually the biggest source of funding, however, there are very few applications for adoptions at Welkom SPCA.

SPCAs provide extraordinary support to their communities, often doing work that very few other people can do.

Without the SPCA, animals will be left to suffer. The Welkom SPCA appeals to the public and business sector for support to keep operational.
