470 additional EMPD officers to bolster fight against crime in the City

Communities are urged to work with the new officers to help them to combat crime.

Four-hundred-and-seventy recruits on July 8 were sworn in as new officers in the metro police force at Boksburg Stadium to help fight crime in the city.

This leaves a total of 2 923 EMPD officers in the city.
According to Ekurhuleni MMC for Community Safety, Letlhogonolo Moseki, the new recruits are the most in the city’s history.

“I’d like to express my gratitude to our officers for their assistance in training our recruits. Patience and persistence yield good results
“We plead our communities to work with the new officers to help them to combat crime,” said Moseki.

Mayor of Ekurhuleni Tania Campbell said when they took over on behalf of a multi-coalition led government they vowed to be hard on crime.

“Since our goal is to combat crime, our crime-fighting strategy is simple. We target high-crime areas.
“I won’t say I’m pleased with the state of the city because there is a lot of crime going on. Business areas are rife with crime, which we will not tolerate. It is past time to rid our city of crime. To do so, we need compassionate officers,” said Campbell.

EMPD recruit Constable Ofentse Lelosa said he is ready to serve the city with pride.
“We enrolled in the Kwa-Thema training academy in 2019 but were distracted by Covid-19 and the academy closed down. We then returned to the academy around August to continue with the training.”
