Drommedaris Primary School fire treated as ‘deliberate act’

No arrests have been made so far.

Reiger Park police are treating the fire that gutted eight classrooms and a storeroom at Drommedaris Primary on June 5 as a ‘deliberate act’.

The station’s acting spokesperson, Sergeant Nathi Mokwana, said no arrests have been made and investigations continue.
Learners were left stranded when their eight Foundation Phase (Grade R to Three) classrooms were damaged by fire.

The Advertiser visited the school on June 21, but management declined to share information on what the school and the department are doing to remedy the situation and ensure that the affected children are accommodated.
However, a source told the Advertiser that the incident has forced the school to take the affected grades back to rotational learning.

A request for information was also sent to the Gauteng Department of Education spokesperson Steve Mabona, but no response was received at the time of publication.
In a press statement issued on June 6, the department said it was working tirelessly to ensure that learning at the school, as well as the health and safety of learners, is not compromised due to the fire.
