Residents urged to stand up against GBV

Attendees of the door-to-door awareness campaign included representatives of the SAPS and local NGOs.

Reiger Park SAPS conducted a GBV door-to-door campaign in Road Reserve informal settlement in Ramaphosa on May 25.

Among the attendees were Thusanag Community Development, GBV brigades, women as safety promoters, CPF patrollers and women’s desk and community members.
The event was designed to raise awareness of the negative impact GBV and abuse have on women and children and to encourage residents, both women and men, to unite against abuse.

Reiger Park SAPS spokesperson Constable Zanele Motaung said: “Not all men practice violence against women and children but women, worldwide, live with the threat of violence every single day.
“This campaign must encourage everyone to blow a whistle against abusers regardless of their gender, economic status and social positions in their community,” said Motaung.

The campaign also opened a platform for victims to tell their stories and seek legal advice from members of the SAPS.
The community urged police officers not to fail GBV victims as they rely on police officers for safety and protection.

Pamphlets on GBV and femicide were handed out to over 200 community members during the event that received a thumbs up from the community and the role players.
The community was educated about the different forms of GBV and encouraged to report any abuse to the relevant authorities or organisations that deal with such matters.
